WHEN IS MY CHILD TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL?

It’s not uncommon for children to get viral illnesses numerous times during the school year, and these symptoms can last a week or more. As a parent/guardian this can make the decision of when to send your child to school and when to keep them home a difficult one. Our goal with these guidelines is to make sure your child is healthy enough to participate in active learning at school, and to keep the other students in their classrooms healthy.

Good to Go!

If your child has any of the following symptoms, they can go to school:

  • Sniffles, runny nose and/or mild cough without a fever
  • Vague complaints of aches, pains or fatigue

Stay Home!

If your child has any of the following symptoms, please keep them at home or make appropriate child care arrangements:

  • Fever – 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Remember that a child must be fever free WITHOUT the use of fever reducing medications for 24 hours before returning to school
  • Eyes – thick with mucus, pus draining, pink eye. With pink eye you may see white or yellow discharge, matted eyelids after sleep, eye pain and/or redness.
  • Sore throat – especially with fever or swollen glands in the neck. With Strep throat, the child may return to school after 12 hours of antibiotics.
  • Diarrhea – two or more watery or loose stools in a 24 hour period
  • Vomiting – two or more times in a 24 hour period

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

Caledonia Area Schools follows the Minnesota state law for medication administration in schools.

Over the Counter Medications

The health office is able to administer over the counter medications to your student as long as the medication is in its original container and labeled with the student’s name.  The Medication Administration form needs to be completed and signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the health office.

Prescription Medications

  • The health office will administer prescription medications. The medication must be delivered to the health office by an adult, in the original bottle, and with the current dosing instructions.
  • The Medication Administration form needs to be completed, signed by the prescribing medical provider and the parent/guardian, and returned to the health office.

Self Carrying of Medications

Students should not carry medications with them during the school day, with the exception of epinephrine auto-injectors, inhalers, and insulin.

IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION

Minnesota State Statute, Section 121A.15 requires that all children Kindergarten or older have record of required immunizations given, conscientious objection, or medical objection form on file in order to attend school. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the School Nurse.
