Driver's Education

Driver’s Ed Classroom Requirements:

  • Must be at least turning 15 years old within 6 months to register for a classroom session.
  • Must pay a $400 fee to reserve a spot in the class. This covers both the classroom and behind the wheel fees.
  • Must attend every class. If a student is absent more than one class, they will be dropped from the class, without a refund.
  • Students must complete all expected work in order to pass the class and receive their blue card. A refund will not be issued to a student who does not complete the expected work.
  • If a student is disruptive or disrespectful and asked to leave class, they are required to make up the hours that they missed. If a student is asked to leave more than one class, they will be dropped from the class, without a refund.

*No refunds for classroom or behind-the-wheel will be issued after one year of classroom enrollment.

 

 

Instruction Permit Information:

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction.
  • Must pass vision and knowledge (written) tests, complete application and pay the required fee ($29.50).
  • The class D knowledge test is offered by appointment only at DVS exam stations. Schedule an appointment online at drive.mn.gov​ by selecting “Schedule an Appointment”.

What to Bring to Knowledge Test:

  • Must bring proof of completion of classroom hours (blue card).
  • Two forms of proper identification. Please use this Identification Requirements chart to determine what two forms of identification you will need to provide.
  • The applicant’s social security number.
  • Corrective lenses (if needed).
  • Parent or legal guardian (if you are under age 18). If a Parent/Guardian is not available at time of application, you can pick up an application and take it with you to obtain their notarized signature and return to complete your transaction.

Behind the Wheel Information:

  • The Community Ed office schedules behind the wheel 3 months at a time.
  • We will contact the student and their parent, by email, when they are on the list for our next session.
  • Students must have their permit and have completed at least 20 hours on their driving log.
  • We try to schedule students within one month of their 16th birthday, so that all of the knowledge is fresh before they take the exam.

To qualify for your provisional license you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Have completed the classroom and behind-the-wheel phases of driver education.
  • Have held an instruction permit for six months with no convictions for moving or alcohol/controlled-substance violations. Reference Minnesota Statutes:169A.20, 169A.54, 169A.33, 169A.54, 169A.35, 169A.50, 169A.51, 169A.52, 169A.53.
  • Schedule an appointment online at drive.mn.gov​ by selecting “Schedule an Appointment”.
    • Appointments are made available 30 days in advance.
  • Have passed a skills (road) test.

What to Bring to the Skills (road) Test:

  • Bring your valid instruction permit
  • Current proof of insurance
  • Check, money order, or cash for the provisional driver’s license fee ($32.50).
  • You’ll also need to know your social security number.
  • Have your parent, court appointed guardian, county appointed foster parent or director of the transitional living program in which you reside approve the driver’s license application.
  • You’ll need to bring your certificate of course completion (white card)
  • Signed supervised driving log verifying that they have driven under the supervision of a licensed driver at least 21 years of age, for not less than 50 hours, at least 15 of which were at night; or if a parent/guardian completes the parent class and submits a certificate of completion to the driver exam staff at the time of the road test, 40 hours, 15 of which were at night.

With a farm permit, you may only drive:

  • To perform work for your parent/guardian
  • During daylight hours
  • Within 20 miles of your farmhouse
  • In cities with a population of less than 100,000 people
  • An individual may perform farm work under the restricted license for any entity authorized to farm under section 500.24.

With a farm permit, you may NOT drive:

  • To and from school
  • To and from activities (sporting events, practices, etc.)
  • To and from friends houses
  • With other people in the car, unless an adult is present

In order to obtain a farmer’s permit (restricted license for farm work):

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Must complete a driver education course and pass a road test.
  • The applicant is not required to wait 6 months after taking the knowledge test in order to take the road test.
  • An applicant for a restricted license must apply to the commissioner for the license on forms prescribed by the commissioner. The application must be accompanied by:
    • A copy of a property tax statement showing that the applicant’s parent or guardian owns land that is classified as agricultural land or a copy of a rental statement or agreement showing that the applicant’s parent or guardian rents land classified as agricultural land; and
    • A written verified statement by the applicant’s parent or guardian setting forth the necessity for the license.
  • Call 651-284-1234 to schedule your road test to receive your farmer’s permit.

 
*The Community Ed office will do our best to schedule a student for behind the wheel early, if they wish to obtain a farmer’s permit, but farmer’s permits DO NOT take priority over older students who are ready to get their license.
